The Art of Layering

The arrival of cooler weather means it’s time for a style switch, but before you sadly bid adieu to your lightweight tees and stuff them in the back of the closet until summertime, consider incorporating them into your winter wardrobe. Yes, I am talking layering. More layers mean more options, new dimensions, more chances to put your unique spin on your style. Layering is flexible. It’s an opportunity to showcase your personality. Plus it’s just plain practical.

A general rule when it comes to layering – more is more! Forget hiding everything under one big jacket or coat instead, go all out making each layer a statement. If you wear a scarf make it a big one, instead of one jacket layer it with another, steer away from greys and blacks and build your look in camel tones or something bright. Play with patterns and different textures this season and never blend in.

What I tried here is- T-shirt + Denim Shirt + Trench coat…

Yes, it may sound a bit odd but, trust me, this casual-meets-tailoring combination looks a lot better in reality than it does on paper.

It’s not for the layering newb though; striking the perfect balance between a denim shirt/jacket and tailored overcoat is no mean feat – everything from fabric thickness to cut and colour needs to be on-point for you to stand a chance of pulling this one off.

Game for the challenge? Start with a no-frills tee that fits perfectly (it’s hard to trump a white crew neck style), add a lightweight slim-cut denim jacket/shirt (no chunky selvedge or sheepskin-lined designs) and round out with a light overcoat that’s minimal in both its design and weight.

This season it is all about camel. Work this neutral tone into your wardrobe with a coat, a leather jacket, pants, anything! It is a versatile colour that can easily be worn in a tonal colour scheme or as a statement piece. I wore it with blues and whites which made the color stand on its own. Throw in a checkered muffler to break the colors and wear the camel suede shoes to complement the trench.

This look can easily be pulled off at work or a nice lunch date. Try to keep these points in mind to master the art of layering:

  1. Lightest weight first- Try the crew neck tees.
  2. Choose complementary colors- Like how I tried blues and camels.
  3. Go for a lighter color base- I tried it with white and then added colors.
  4. Be comfortable- Don’t stuff yourself with heavy layers, wear what suits you the best and avoid too many heavy garments.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post as much as you are enjoying the winters. Winters are not here to stay so try this layering today to get some GQ quotient in your life. Till then TheStyleDoodler signing off and stay stylish!!
