The leather jacket has been portrayed as the rebels jacket since the 1950’s when it appeared on the back of Marlon Brando in the Wild One and since then it has gained a reputation as the coolest jacket worn by the coolest people. There was an era when it was perfect to romanticise a grease-smudged guy who can fine-tune a Triumph carburettor, given that today’s real hero is someone who can fix the settings on your Mac’s outgoing mail server. The changing times have shown us how the definition of a rebel is completely different. And obviously we remember SRK in DDLJ, how can we forget that leather jacket with a checked shirt. All of us like to think we have a bit of the rebel inside us and the black leather jacket gives you the opportunity to feel slightly cooler than we would in say a suit or sweater. We suddenly feel more adventurous in the way we go about our day. Don a cardigan and you look like you’re off to the library, throw on a leather jacket and you look as though you’re off to being the badass of the colony.
The good news for today’s smarter rebels is that fashion has evolved or at least the leather jacket has. Though the rebel phase has passed, but leather jacket is still a cult which we all follow. We all droll over the fall winter collections of all fashion brands we follow and they make sure that leather jacket is a part of it every season.
Nothing quite says cool as much as the colour black and nothing is quite as cool as an all black outfit topped off with a leather jacket. But then time has changed isn’t it? A recent study found that a whole lot of us leave our jackets on the hangers because we can’t think of new ways to wear the biker jacket trend. And that’s why I chose the good old classic biker jacket and doodled away to make it stand out and show what else can be done to this official piece of swag.
Longline/ oversized trend has garnered notable popularity over the last few years, in part thanks to the likes of Kanye, A$AP Rocky et al who have favoured elongated styles paired with contrasting layers. Long length tees aren’t going to be to everyone’s taste or style. They have a defined urban appeal that sits very well alongside the sportier direction menswear design has taken, but they’re certainly never going to dethrone more conventional, classic cuts. Think of the tall tee as a way of giving the casual side of your wardrobe a reboot and a means of freshening things up. I was scared to death when I saw the trend pacing up the fashion streets. A guy of my height, how will I carry this off? But trust me, if I can, then you can too. You need to find the right fit and you are good to go with this trend.
So here it is, I tried to give a different take to the biker jacket and combined the new cuts with the classic and I am guessing I did a good job. I kept the bottom simple with the faded distressed jeans and the printed espadrilles. On a bike for a ride or in a cafe with that book, this will surely make an impression on the passers by. The bright pink tee is an idea of throwing some hue to the jacket. But if it’s too much for you then try the white or a blue tee. Oh, and don’t forget the sunglasses and a good watch for the day after the night before.
While it’s us men who do the walking, it is our clothes that do the talking. Never is this so evident than with the black leather jacket, a jacket so cool it has spent the best part of a century stealing the show both on stages and film sets in front of a global audience. It is a item of clothing to be revered, to held in high esteem and like all good rebels, treated with an air of caution. If you are going to wear a leather jacket, wear it how you want to. Don’t care about what the book of fashion says. I wore it with a pink longline vest for god sake. A rebel in making, yeah may be.
